Public Art & Murals
I create site-specific murals and public artworks for councils, schools, cultural organisations, businesses, architects and community settings.
My background is in fine art, illustration and community arts, and over the last 30 years I’ve developed a practice that combines strong visual ideas with an understanding of how artwork needs to function in real spaces.
Projects range from large-scale exterior murals and public-realm commissions to immersive interiors, architectural interventions and collaborative work with communities.
I work across a broad visual language — including botanical and wildlife imagery, portraiture, illustration, abstraction, trompe l’oeil and playful perspective — using spray paint, brushwork and mixed techniques according to the needs of the site.
The starting point is always the place itself: its architecture, purpose, history, users and surrounding environment. From there, I develop artwork that feels specific to the location rather than simply applied to a wall.
For public and commercial projects I can manage the full process, including site assessment, concept development, stakeholder consultation, surface preparation, access requirements, risk assessments, installation and final finishing.
Commissioning a mural or public artwork
Every project begins with a conversation about the site, what needs to change and what the artwork needs to achieve.
Sometimes a client arrives with a clear brief. At other times the initial idea is much more open. I can help develop that starting point into a coherent visual concept that works at architectural scale and responds properly to the setting.
Depending on the project, this can include research, visual development, consultation with users or communities, detailed design proposals and coordination with other contractors or project teams.
The aim is not simply to decorate a surface, but to create work that changes how a place feels, gives it identity and makes a lasting contribution to the environment.
Budgets and scope
Each commission is priced individually according to scale, complexity, design development, access, materials, surface preparation and the level of project management involved.
Substantial school, commercial and public-realm commissions generally involve budgets from several thousand pounds upwards, with larger or more complex projects reaching significantly higher values.
Where a budget has already been established, I can develop an approach that makes the strongest possible use of it and clearly set out what can be achieved within the available scope.
For larger projects, design development, production, specialist access, materials, assistants and other delivery costs can be identified separately so that the budget remains clear and transparent.
