Ruperra Street Play Park — Pill Primary

A mural made with Year 6 pupils, bringing together national flowers from the many backgrounds in their school community. When I returned for the later Pill Park project, I learned that the teachers had adopted the design workshop approach as part of their curriculum.

Street art mural of swallows for Full Colour Maindee, painted by Andy O’Rourke

Full Colour Maindee

In 2024, more than 40 artists brought new work to walls, shopfronts and public spaces across Maindee. I helped recruit and support the artists, curated the programme and painted murals of my own. I relished both roles: making work myself and helping other artists find the right places for theirs.

Greening Maindee Gateway Garden mural in Newport by Andy O’Rourke

Gateway Garden — Maindee & RHS Malvern

Llanhilleth — Community Mural

The young people of Clwb Llan helped start this mural. We explored what Llanhilleth meant to them in workshops at the Miners Institute, then shared the ideas for wider community feedback. I brought those contributions together in the finished painting.

Immersive nature mural at Parc Penallta Education Centre

Parc Penallta — An Ecology Room

At Parc Penallta, the painting surrounds you—and some details only appear when the lights go out. I worked with the rangers to make a room they could use to explore habitats, pollination and how other animals see the world.

Milton Primary School mural by Andy O’Rourke

Milton Primary — Murals & Augmented Reality

Children’s ideas became connected habitat murals, from underwater scenes to Welsh woodland. A later sunflower mural supported Milton’s Ukrainian pupils and families. Then a separate project opened the walls up again, as children made animation, sound and video to bring the paintings to life.

Newport Medieval Ship — Anamorphic Mural

How do you convey the size of a medieval ship when the vessel itself is in pieces? I worked with the Newport Ship team to create a painting visitors can step into, using 3D ship models and a carefully chosen viewpoint to make the vessel appear to project into the room.
